Mitch Evans has taken out the Silverstone GP2 Series Feature Race after an intense battle with championship leader Jolyon Palmer.
The pair was scrapping for position for most of the race, which saw quality racing between the two after both chose the right strategy by starting on the prime tyres.
The second place for Palmer means he extends his championship lead over Felipe Nasr and Johnny Cecotto, who finished in sixth and seventh respectively.
Pole sitter Raffaele Marciello made a blistering start, storming away from the pack as many cars bogged down and got average starts, Palmer and Evans included.
Marciello held the lead for 10 laps before pitting to take on the better performing prime tyres. However he ran into traffic as many of the midfield drivers were on the long-running prime tyres and didn’t have to yield.
It then went from bad to worse for the Ferrari development driver, as he lost drive with 15 laps to go in the race and missing out on what was almost a certain podium.
The final podium place went to ART’s Stoffel Vandoorne, whom himself had a close battle with Julian Leal, passing him in the pits and doing well to defend the position on cold tyres.
Leal to his credit didn’t let that deter him as he passed Stefano Coletti on the last lap to take fourth position. The pair made contact during the contest and the stewards ultimately ruled that the Colombian was careless in his move on the Monegasque driver, reversing their finishing positions after a post-race hearing.
Nasr was on track for a good finish and a possible fight for the podium, however he ran into troubles during his pit stop where a cross-threaded wheel nut cost him valuable seconds.
Conor Daly made an incredible start, jumping from 21st position to 12th. Although didn’t have the pace or the tyres to keep the position, he ended up dropping back to 14th.
Arthur Pic was unlucky to continue his trend of scoring points at almost every race as he finished just outside the top ten, two seconds behind Daniel Abt in tenth place.
