Marussia drivers Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton were overjoyed after achieving the team’s best qualifying result at a rain-affected Silverstone on Saturday.
The pair took advantage of the strategic errors made by Ferrari and Williams with the mixed weather conditions to progress to the second qualifying phase, where they finished 12th and 13th respectively.
Although both drivers believed they could have finished higher if Sauber driver Esteban Gutiérrez hadn’t beached it in the gravel trap to bring out the yellow flags after crashing late in Q2 and ruining their final laps, they are happy with what was achieved.
“A fantastic day for the team and I’m so happy for everyone,” Bianchi beamed after qualifying.
“After our first points in Monaco, it’s great that we have now achieved the team’s best ever qualifying result.
“This result is down to a combination of great strategy, judging the changing conditions to perfection and then just making the most of the windows we had out on the track when the conditions were right for the tyres.”
Chilton, who will drop five places after a gearbox change, added: “The team has done an incredible job today, making some fantastic calls and putting us right where we needed to be at exactly the right time.
“I’ve got the five place penalty for this morning’s gearbox change, which will drop me back, but a good qualifying session was what I needed because of that penalty, and that is what we’ve achieved, so I can’t be disheartened.”
