Craig Lowndes was the fastest qualifier for the final race of the Townsville 500 triple-header, but it will be Jason Bright who starts from pole position after the series veteran incurred a two-place grid penalty after his wild driving in Saturday’s closing sprint race.

After being the fastest provisional qualifier in the preceding 20-minute open session, Lowndes was the last man out in the one-lap Top 10 Shootout and delivered a time of 1:13.098 to edge out Bright by just eight-hundredths of a second.

Bright was sandwiched on the timesheets by the sister Red Bull Holden of reigning champion Jamie Whincup, who was less than one-hundredth of a second slower in one of the tightest shootouts in the championship’s history.

Bright and Whincup will therefore share the front of the grid, while Lowndes is demoted to third. Scott McLaughlin qualified fourth-fastest for the third time on the trot in his GRM Volvo S60. Garth Tander, James Courtney, Shane van Gisbergen, Nick Percat, Will Davison and Chaz Mostert completed the top ten.

Davison will also drop two grid spots, courtesy of his own grid penalty for colliding with Lowndes in yesterday’s second race.

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom’s miserable qualifying form at Townsville continued, as he once again failed to make the top-ten. He’ll start today’s 250-kilometre race from twelfth position.
