Jolyon Palmer has continued his impeccable qualifying run by taking pole position ahead of Saturday’s Feature Race in Hockenheim, the GP2 Series’ 200th.
Palmer, who hasn’t qualified lower than second, topped the timesheets early on in the session and remained there until the end after a late surge by Stoffel Vandoorne failed to beat his time.
Tom Dillmann impressed on his return to GP2 by qualifying in fourth position, while Arthur Pic slotted into the top 10 in sixth position. The pair was separated by a dejected Felipe Nasr, who failed to close the points gap to Palmer by beating him to pole position.
Racing Engineering’s Raffaele Marciello encountered some more bad luck after the unfortunate weekend in Silverstone. Marciello was impeded on two of his flying laps by two different drivers, the second time costing him a possible front row start.
The first half of qualifying he almost ran into the back of a slow running Rio Haryanto, then on his final attempt for pole position he was blocked by a careless Takuya Izawa, ruining his lap. Both incidents are being looked into by the Stewards.
Johnny Cecotto Jr. was very quick early on in the session, but failed to put together a perfect lap and ended the session in seventh position.
Russian Time’s Mitch Evans also struggled to put together a perfect lap, he finished well down the order in 15th position and will have his work cut out for him come tomorrow.
