Lewis Hamilton has headed another Mercedes one-two in the first practice session in Hungary, just under two-tenths of a second quicker than team-mate Nico Rosberg.
The pair went straight out onto the track at the start of the session, utilizing the extra set of medium compound tyres provided by Pirelli for the first 30 minutes of FP1.
Both drivers traded fastest laps early on attempting to gain the upper hand for the weekend, as bad result here will stir in the mind of a driver for a month before F1 returns to Belgium after the summer break.
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finally had a session without problems and was able to post a 1:26.421 to place him third on the timesheets, 0.6 seconds behind Rosberg. His team-mate Fernando Alonso was 0.4 seconds behind him in fourth position.
The start of the practice session wasn’t only about Mercedes jumping on track early, but it was the smoking Marussia of Max Chilton that turned heads in pit lane.
The Briton was returning from an installation lap when blue smoke started to pour out of his MR03, he stopped just outside the McLaren garage where Marshals and mechanics were able to put out the blaze.
Chilton then sat out most of the session as a gearbox oil leak was the result of the fire. He was able to get out on track with five minutes to spare and post a timed lap, just over two tenths faster than his team-mate Jules Bianchi in 22nd.
A few drivers were complaining about the rear tyres overheating early in the session, as the track temperature exceeded 40 degrees Celsius.
Jenson Button and Romain Grosjean both reported downforce issues on their cars, with Button suggesting the rear of the car was lacking in downforce, despite running a new wing.
