Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has again finished ahead of Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in the second practice session at the Hungaroring.
Hamilton posted a 1:24.482 on the soft tyre before switching to a race simulation with 30 minutes to run. The Briton seems to be more comfortable than Rosberg in Hungary, a track that massively favours Hamilton in statistics.
In seven races, Hamilton has won four, while Rosberg has never finished higher than ninth position, let alone qualify in the top three.
So far this weekend Hamilton has the edge over Rosberg, posting faster and more consistent lap times whilst on higher fuel loads.
Rosberg’s session had a slight interruption when he was instructed to use a lower gear in Turn One as he had engine damage. However, the engine Mercedes are running on Rosberg’s car is most likely at the end of its life and will be replaced tomorrow.
Sebastian Vettel seemed to be the best of the rest as he finished the session in third place, 0.6 seconds off Hamilton’s fastest lap. He was also consistently fast in his race simulation, suggesting he will be the major threat to take the last spot on the podium come Sunday.
Williams finished a bit down the order in both practice sessions, as they haven’t been able to utilise their outright pace as the Hungaroring doesn’t have long straights. Valtteri Bottas ended the session in eighth while his team-mate Felipe Massa was 0.4 seconds behind in tenth.
Fernando Alonso was back in front at Ferrari, finishing the session in fourth and three-tenths ahead of Kimi Raikkonen who had another practice session free of interruptions.
The same couldn’t be said about Romain Grosjean however, as his session was interrupted by a cooling system leak. He only managed 14 laps compared to team-mate Pastor Maldonado’s 40.
