Craig Lowndes has claimed his fifth pole position of the 2014 V8 Supercars Championship season, heading an all-Red Bull front row in qualifying for the first of today’s two 100-kilometre sprint races at Queensland Raceway.
With many teams gambling on soft tyre runs, his teammate Jamie Whincup put down an impressive opening lap – a 1:09.5 – but Lowndes didn’t waste any time once he got going. The eleven-time winner at Ipswich put in a 1:09.422, which ultimately proved unbeatable.
Championship leader Mark Winterbottom provisionally held third place, but he would have to improve on his 0.4-second deficit as the field headed into the pits to change tyres before heading out for another run.
Scott McLaughlin – who topped the final practice session yesterday – clocked the third-fastest time to claim ‘best of the rest’ honours on the second row ahead of Fabian Coulthard’s Holden.
James Courtney was fifth-fastest ahead of Will Davison in the Erebus AMG at the team’s home race. Winterbottom led the Ford runners with the seventh-fastest time, with his FPR stablemates David Reynolds (8th) and Chaz Mostert (10th) also getting into the top-ten.
It was a poor session for Townsville winner Garth Tander, who managed the fifteenth-fastest time in his HRT Holden. Also struggling were Jason Bright (18th, after a trip off-track) and three-time Ipswich winner Russell Ingall, who was second-slowest.
Race 23 gets underway today at 2:25pm local time (GMT +10).
