Scott McLaughlin will start from pole position for today’s second V8 Supercars Championship sprint race at Queensland Raceway after posting a scintillating lap time in today’s ten-minute qualifying session.

After qualifying third-fastest for today’s first sprint race, the Volvo driver was fast out of the gate in the second session, posting a 1:09.76 to claim provisional pole position. Swedish teammate Robert Dahlgren was second-quickest with a promising banker lap, while Lee Holdsworth was third-fastest in the Erebus AMG. Both would tumble down the order to 18th and 21st respectively as most of the field improved on their second runs.

After a quick visit to the pits, the battle for timesheet honours was on again. James Courtney and Will Davison moved into second and third until defending champion Jamie Whincup came through with a flying lap to snatch provisional pole position.

His joy proved to be short-lived, as McLaughlin blasted his way back into top spot with an outstanding lap time to edge Whincup out by 0.07 seconds. A shock second place on the grid went to the Nissan of Michael Caruso with a performance that few believed was possible in the down-on-power Altima.

Whincup was demoted to third and headed an all-Red Bull second row of the grid ahead of teammate Craig Lowndes. Shane van Gisbergen was fifth-fastest in the Tekno Holden, while Rick Kelly underlined Nissan’s promise with the sixth-fastest time. Chaz Mostert, Tim Slade, Nick Percat and Fabian Coulthard completed the top ten.

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom was eleventh-fastest ahead of the two HRT Holdens of Garth Tander and James Courtney.

Race 24 kicks off at 4:30pm local itme (GMT +10).
