Volvo Polestar have set the start line for what will be another interesting race today, after Scott McLaughlin claimed pole position for the Feature Race of the Sydney Motorsport Park 400.

The young Kiwi was out to a flying start in the 20-minute session, knocking the times into the 1m31s range on just the very first lap. Nissan’s Michael Caruso was gunning for top spot, taking provisional pole just over five minutes in to the session with a lap time of 1:31.25, while Craig Lowndes found himself running off the circuit and suffering from front end damage, but was quickly able to regain traction and avoid a red flag for the session.

The entire field pitted for fresh rubber and another crack at improving their times. The final blast for the top spot was expected to be in the last five minutes, giving teams a chance to make any last-minute adjustments.

Yesterday’s double-winner Shane van Gisbergen was first to break the times into the 1m30s range and with all cars on soft tyres it was anyone’s session.

Championship leader Jamie Whincup geared up for two flying laps and didn’t disappoint, locking in a solid final time of 1:29.8303. It was contrasting fortunes for teammate Lowndes, who didn’t manage to return to the circuit after his early off-track moment, consigning him to a last-placed grid slot.

The final lap saw many cars including the likes of Whincup, James Courtney and Fabian Coulthard take top spot, but nobody could again out do the speed demon from Volvo Polestar Racing, with Scott McLaughlin locking in pole for the weekend’s final race with his final lap.

Today’s 200-kilometre Feature Race takes place over 51 laps, kicking off at 3:45pm local time (GMT +10).
