Australian touring car fans can take another trip down memory lane with the latest special DVD release highlighting three of tin-top legend Dick Johnson’s best Australian Touring Car Championship race wins.
Johnson is a five-time national champion and a legend in Australian motorsport history, and for the first time, the Magic Moments of Motorsport team has dug into the archives to showcase three of the Queenslander’s best wins during his lengthy touring car career.
First off is the opening round of the 1988 ATCC season in its Group A heyday, where quick Dick dominated the field in his might turbocharged Shell Ford Sierra – with mirrors folded backfor extra straightline speed! – at Calder Park Raceway. The event was the first where Johnson would partner with fellow touring car legend John Bowe; a driver pairing that would last 11 years.
The second race highlighted on this DVD is Round 2 of the 1990 Australian Touring Car Championship at Symmons Plains Raceway.
His run to victory was considerably tougher here, having to overcome his old rival Peter Brock and a host of other Ford Sierras driven by Bowe, Glenn Seton, Tony Longhurst and Colin Bond.
Rounding out the disc, we fast forward to the 5-litre V8 era where Johnson claimed a popular home win on home soil in the opening race at Queensland’s Lakeside Raceway in 1994.
A bonus chapter is also included, with rare highlights of Johnson’s first touring car race win, which came at Lakeside in 1981.
This is a release that all Johnson, Ford and Australian touring car fans will want to have in their collection.
Magic Moments of Motorsport: Three of Dick’s Best is available at all leading and specialty DVD retailers (RRP $29.95 incl GST). Our review copy was kindly supplied to us by Beyond Home Entertainment.
