Scott McLaughlin has celebrated the Polestar Volvo Racing team’s announcement of a title sponsorship deal by putting his S60 racer on pole position for the second and final race of this weekend’s Gold Coast 600.
The New Zealander pumped out a superb time of 1:11.0273 on his final flying lap to snatch top spot from reigning championship Jamie Whincup by 0.125 seconds; the result moved the popular youngster from fourth on the timesheets to top spot.
Whincup’s Red Bull Racing teammate Craig Lowndes will share Row 2 of the starting grid with yesterday’s pole- and race-winner, Shane van Gisbergen, in the TEKNO Holden.
Will Davison qualified an excellent fifth-fastest in his Erebus Motorsport AMG Mercedes, ahead of former teammate David Reynolds in the extensively rebuilt Bottle-O Racing Ford Falcon.
James Moffat was seventh-fastest in his Norton Nissan, ensuring all five manufacturers were represented on the first four rows of the grid. Tim Slade, Chaz Mostert – despite a wild crash at Turn 2 – and James Courtney rounded out the top ten.
Championship hopeful Mark Winterbottom once again had a poor qualifying session and will start from thirteenth place in his FPR Falcon, behind Garth Tander and Michael Caruso.
Today’s 300-kilometre race over 102 laps kicks off at 1:55pm local time (GMT +10).
