The wait for the 2015 IndyCar Series season schedule has now finally drawn to a close, with series officials announcing a 17-race schedule – down from 18 in 2014 – for the North American open-wheel series.
Continuing with its still-to-be-explained logic of a condensed six-month calendar, the championship will kick off on March 8 in Brazil and close at the end of August at Sonoma Raceway. It marks the first time since 1995 that a road course will host the final event of the season.
The traditional superspeedway finale at Fontana has been dropped, with the Californian oval circuit playing host to a June calendar slot.
With last year’s calendar featuring three double-header events, the 2015 schedule has just one: a pair of street circuit races around the Belle Isle parklands in Detroit.
Previously announced calendar additions at Brasília and New Orleans remain on the schedule, while the pair of street circuit races at Houston’s Reliant Park are dropped this year.
The sole Canadian round originally slated to take place at Mosport has been moved back to its traditional street circuit venue at Toronto’s Exhibition Place, and it will be the fourth venue over consecutive weekends to host the championship as it crisscrosses the continent.
