Stoffel Vandoorne has closed the gap to Felipe Nasr for second in the championship after clinching pole position from 2014 champion Jolyon Palmer.
Vandoorne now lies four points behind Nasr in the championship after receiving four points from securing pole position. Nasr qualified in fifth position, seven tenths off the Belgian’s benchmark.
Stéphane Richelmi showed strong pace and practice and continued to threaten for pole in qualifying, holding the top spot for 30 seconds before Palmer demoted him to second.
Mitch Evans was quick but just off the top three’s pace, finishing in fourth position and six tenths behind Vandoorne. His team-mate Artem Markelov found himself in an all too familiar 26th position.
Raffaele Marciello made it inside the top 10 finishing in eighth position. Marciello has never qualified lower than 8th position throughout the whole season, although he will incur a five-place grid penalty that he carries over from the Russian sprint race.
Arthur Pic continued his consistent run in GP2 qualifying seventh just behind Pierre Gasly in the Caterham.
Nicholas Latifi impressed on his GP2 debut qualifying in 18th position, six positions ahead of Jon Lancaster in the other Hilmer.
