The V8 Supercars Championship has announced details of the new ‘Gen2’ regulations which it hopes to introduce in 2017.
The major changes feature an opening up of the engine configurations and car body types which will be able to compete in the championship, which is seeking to remain attractive to new manufacturers and more relevant to road-going consumers.
In summary, the five major objectives of the new regulations are:
- The V8 Supercars Championship is to continue as a high-octane, dynamic racing platform – fast, loud and aggressive
- The Gen2 Supercar opens the sport to new engine and body configurations, alongside the existing normally-aspirated V8 engines
- The new regulations aim to have increased relevance to manufacturers, race fans, teams and sponsors
- The DNA of the series remains intact: front-engined, rear-wheel-drive, four seat configuration racers
- The V8 Supercars Championship will unveil a refreshed master brand as the sports’ identity from 2015.
The widening of the technical regulations will allow existing – and new – manufacturers to enter non-sedan car models and/or to fit them with smaller capacity four- or six-cylinder turbo engines.
It is imperative to keep the sport relevant to the current environment, entertaining and, critically, viable for the race teams,” V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton said.
“The current climate in world motorsport is absolutely clear. Manufacturers want choice in what they go racing with, otherwise they won’t participate. They want their DNA represented and so do we. We will not compromise our DNA – fast, loud and fierce racing.
“The sheer brute power and sound of V8 Supercars is synonymous with the sport. A key area will be retaining the acoustic effect of high powered race cars no matter the engine or make.”
The finer details of the 2017 technical regulations will be unveiled towards the end of 2015, with the aim to allow manufacturers to trial and test the new cars in 2016.
