Nico Rosberg has finished 0.3s ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel in the first practice session of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
The Ferrari pair were the only drivers in the field to reduce the gap to Rosberg’s benchmark by under a second, demonstrating the progress the team has made over the winter break.
Lewis Hamilton failed to post a lap time after he lost power and caused him to stop on track at Turn Nine. The team were experiencing telemetry problems early in the session and have narrowed the problem down to a hardware problem in the power unit.
It is not yet known if Hamilton will require a power unit change ahead of FP2 as the team continues to identify the cause of the problem.
The other big story of the session came from the Manor garage, as both cars took to the track for the first time in 2015. Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi both completed eight laps, with a second splitting the pair as they finished in 18th and 19th respectively.
Fernando Alonso successfully made his return to the cockpit of a Formula 1 car, finishing three places ahead of team-mate Jenson Button who could only manage 17th. The McLaren pair was separated by the Force India duo of Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Pérez.
Lotus were the next best finishers behind the Ferraris with Romain Grosjean ending the session in fourth, almost a second-and-a-half off the pace of the Mercedes.
Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo squeezed himself between the two Toro Rosso drivers Carlos Sainz Jr and Max Verstappen in sixth, while his team-mate Daniil Kvyat finished in ninth.
