V8 Supercars veteran Craig Lowndes has dominated proceedings in qualifying at Symmons Plains Raceway ahead of Saturday’s two SuperSprint races.
The Red Bull Racing driver claimed pole position in both ten-minute qualifying sessions, and with overtaking traditionally proving to be a tough affair around the narrow 2.41-kilometre circuit, Lowndes will be hoping to capitalise from top spot.
Race 4 will see him share the front row of the grid with Prodrive Racing’s Mark Winterbottom – who was fastest across Friday’s two one-hour practice sessions – ahead of James Courtney (HRT), Saturday practice pace-setter Will Davison (Erebus Motorsport) and David Reynolds (Bottle-O Racing).
TEKNO Autosport’s Shane van Gisbergen was sixth-fastest in the session, but will drop two grid positions to to Chaz Mostert and Jamie Whincup after tipping Ash Walsh’s Mercedes into a spin at the Turn 4 hairpin.

The undoubted star of the second qualifying session was Super Black Racing rookie Andre Heimgartner, who qualified fifth-fastest in his first hit-out in the latest Falcon FG X model.
Garth Tander was sixth-fastest in the second HRT Commodore, with Winterbottom, Scott McLaughlin (Polestar Volvo), Davison and van Gisbergen completing the top-ten.
Marcos Ambrose’s replacement at DJR Team Penske, Scott Pye, didn’t fare much better than the form showed by the two-time champion, and will line up in 15th and 18th places respectively.
