The second round of the GP2 series heads to Spain at the Circuit de Catalunya, where the championship returns to Europe and to a track that’s well known by drivers and teams.

Stoffel Vandoorne leads the championship for ART Grand Prix, 10 points ahead of Campos Racing’s Rio Haryanto and 20 points clear of Alexander Rossi.

Vandoorne took pole position and won the Feature Race last round in Bahrain while Haryanto claimed his first GP2 victory by winning the Sprint Race on Sunday. Lazarus also got their first GP2 podium thanks to Nathanael Berthon who finished third behind Vandoorne.

This weekend will see the return of Hilmer Motorsport after they were absent from the opening round in Bahrain. Former Trident driver Johnny Cecotto Jr. and GP3 graduate Nick Yelloly will drive for the team this weekend.

The hot temperatures in Bahrain saw some drivers struggle with tyre degradation, this weekend will be no different as the Circuit de Catalunya is an extremely demanding track on tyres. Long high-speed corners put a heavy load through the tyres, particularly the front left due to the clockwise layout of the track. Pirelli have selected the Hard and Soft compound tyres for this event.

There will be one grid penalty for the Feature Race on Saturday, as Sergio Canamasas will drop three grid places after he was found guilty of making contact with Racing Engineering’s Jordan King during the Sprint Race in Bahrain.

Qualifying will be held after the Formula 1’s second practice session on Friday with the Feature Race starting after qualifying for the Formula 1 on Saturday.
