Nico Rosberg has topped the timesheets ahead of qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix with his team-mate two-tenths of a second behind in third position. Sebastian Vettel split the Mercedes pair in second for Ferrari.
While Rosberg enjoyed a straight-forward session preparing for qualifying, Hamilton experienced an uncharacteristic spin at the exit of Turn Three. The reigning World Champion ran wide onto the AstroTurf sending him into a spin which flat-spotted his tyres.
Daniel Ricciardo spent quite a bit of time on track early in the session, making up for time lost yesterday where he only completed 13 laps between the two practice sessions after encountering an ERS problem. He put in his qualifying run earlier than the rest of the drivers to focus on his long runs and ended the session sixth fastest with 19 laps.
His team-mate Daniil Kvyat spent more than half of the session sat in the garage due to a water leak problem. Kvyat took to the track with 18 minutes left to run but only completed seven laps.
Williams’ Felipe Massa didn’t seem to put a good lap together finishing behind Ricciardo in seventh and over a second off the pace. Massa’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas finished higher up in the order in fourth, four-tenths of a second quicker than Massa.
The Toro Rosso pair continued their good form with both cars finishing in the top ten. Max Verstappen was 1.111 seconds off Rosberg’s benchmark in eighth while Carlos Sainz Jr. was a further six-tenths of a second back in 10th.
Jenson Button was the leading McLaren, finishing two places clear from team-mate Fernando Alonso in 14th.
