Chaz Mostert has claimed a clean sweep of pole positions for this weekend’s NP300 Navara Winton SuperSprint round of the V8 Supercars Championship, beating home Prodrive teammate Mark Winterbottom in qualifying for Sunday’s 200-kilometre feature race.
The youngster once again headed another Prodrive rout of qualifying, which saw the stable’s two Pepsi-liveried cars lock out the front row of the grid, while David Reynolds’ Bottle-O Ford Falcon FG X was third-quickest.
The final qualifying result came down to everyone’s last ‘roll of the dice’ run on the Soft Dunlop tyres in the dying stages of the twenty-minute session; the leaderboard changed a number of times over the course of the last minutes of play.
Winterbottom provisionally claimed top spot with a 1:23.39 time and bettered ir by a further five-hundredths of a second on his next tour, before Mostert wrestled pole position from his teammate with a 1:23.1334.
It marked the fifth pole position in six races for the up-and-coming driver, who has only managed to convert one of those into a race win.
“I didn’t expect to get three poles this weekend; I’ve just got to try and get it off the line now,” he admitted.
Nissan’s strong weekend continued for Michael Caruso and Rick Kelly, who sandwiched the Erebus Motorsport Mercedes of Will Davison in fourth and sixth respectively.
The fastest Holden honour went to Fabian Coulthard, who was seventh-fastest ahead of Craig Lowndes, Scott Pye – marking the best qualifying result for the DJR Team Penske outfit all season – and Shane van Gisbergen.
The Walkinshaw Holdens once again struggled for one-lap pace, with Tim Slade finishing as the best-placed in the quartet in fifteenth place.
Reigning champion Jamie Whincup had another poor qualifying run, and languished all the way down in 22nd place.
