Sebastian Vettel has been hit with a five-place grid penalty and has had three penalty points applied to his Super License after being found guilty of overtaking another car during a red flag period in final practice for the Canadian Grand Prix.

The German overtook Roberto Merhi’s Manor Marussia en route to pit lane when the session was red-flagged in the wake of Sauber driver Felipe Nasr’s crash on the back straight.

Vettel had originally qualified a lowly 17th after a troubled qualifying session and was subsequently summoned to the FIA Stewards’ offices where the footage of the overtaking move was played and he was handed the grid drop.

Vettel will start from the last row of the grid, alongside McLaren’s Jenson Button, who failed to post a time in qualifying as his engine was being changed following a failure in FP3.
