The increasing advent of huge expanses of tarmac run-off areas has tempted today’s drivers to sometimes make cornering around Grand Prix circuits something of an exercise in creativity.

That came to a stop on Saturday, with the FIA finally putting its foot down, insisting that anyone who ran wide at the exit of Silverstone’s Copse corner would have that qualifying lap time deleted.

No less than eleven drivers – more than half of the 20-driver field – fell foul of the new track limits rule in qualifying, with Pastor Maldonado the only driver to be dinged twice.
