Lewis Hamilton has ended the second practice session fastest ahead of the Red Bull Racing duo of Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo.
Both Hamilton and team-mate Nico Rosberg occupied the top spots in the first thirty minutes of the session, but it was Hamilton who was able to continuously shave off a few tenths of a second to keep clear of Rosberg.
Kimi Raikkonen again enjoyed a good session, finishing fifth and two places clear of team-mate Sebastian Vettel in the other Ferrari. Raikkonen spent a short amount of time on top in the first half of the session as he was one of the first drivers to make the switch to the soft compound tyre.
Hamilton then set the benchmark for the rest of the session, a 1:23.949 was too quick for anyone to match with Kvyat coming closest by 0.3 seconds.
Both Red Bull cars showed strong pace in the long run simulation, posting the same lap times as the front-running Mercedes cars. Whatever joy that was coming from the Red Bull garage was short lived however, as Ricciardo’s engine failed leaving a stream of smoke behind it as the Australian parked the RB11 at Turn 11.
The red flag was brought out for the third time this weekend as marshals got to work in removing the Red Bull as Ricciardo lost valuable track time.
Scuderia Toro Rosso’s session looked promising with Carlos Sainz finishing in sixth position. His teammate Max Verstappen was further down the grid in eleventh due to minor engine issues.
Fernando Alonso made it into the top 10 in eighth position ahead of the Williams pair of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa, while Alonso’s teammate Jenson Button two-tenths adrift in twelfth position.
Force India opted to keep both Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg in the garage as the team wanted to determine the cause of Perez’s crash in FP1.
