Red Bull junior driver and DAMS racer Pierre Gasly will start tomorrow’s Italian Grand Prix Feature Race in pole position, after posting the fastest time in qualifying ahead of Russian Time’s Mitch Evans and ART’s Stoffel Vandoorne.

Sergey Sirotkin was the first to post a competitive lap time, although he was quickly pushed down the order after Evans, Gasly and Vandoorne all went scarcely quicker. Heading into the mid-session lull the top five were covered by four-tenths of a second.

Alexander Rossi was running down in 19th position after finishing the practice session second-fastest. He decided to register some laps while the rest of the field were in the pits, the same tactic that had awarded Vandoorne pole last round in Belgium.

His first lap was well off the pace, only promoting him to fifteenth. The American then ran a few laps longer to get himself up into eighth position before returning to the pits once the rest of the field had re-joined the track for their final runs. The American was left to watch the rest of the session and was bumped down to tenth-fastest in the final reckoning.

Once all drivers were back on track Gasly was the only driver in the top five to improve on his position, jumping from third to first and demoting Evans to second.

Rio Haryanto was a few tenths of a second behind in sixth place ahead of team-mate Arthur Pic, while Richie Stanaway returned to the top ten in eighth position, just a fraction quicker than Sergio Canamasas.

The grid order for Saturday’s Feature Race was subsequently given a shake-up as no less than four drivers – Evans, Canamasas, Marlon Stöckinger and series debutante Meindert van Buuren – were given grid penalties.

Evans was stripped of his front row start after the scrutineers found that his Russian Time car’s tyre pressures were too low; the same fate befell Canamasas and both will start at the back of the grid.

Stöckinger and van Buuren were both ruled to have impeded René Binder at the Parabolica and were each handed three-place grid penalties.

The 30-lap Feature Race takes place at 15:40 local time (GMT +2).
