Nico Hülkenberg has ended Ferrari’s pre-season testing dominance by setting the fastest time on Day 3 of the 2016 Formula 1 pre-season tests on the ultra-soft tyre, 2.7 seconds quicker than Romain Grosjean in the new Haas F1 car.

Although his time of 1:23.110 was impressive in his first run for the year, it was still three-tenths of a second shy of Sebastian Vettel’s best time on the ultra-soft tyre he set on Tuesday.

In his two days of testing Vettel racked up 195 laps, while his teammate Kimi Räikkönen was only able to manage just four installation laps in the morning session without setting a time as Ferrari performed a number of fuel system checks.

Raikkonen enjoyed a better afternoon clocking up 73 laps and moving up to second on the timesheets using the medium tyre, just under three seconds off Hulkenberg in the Force India. Soon after he was dropped to third position when Grosjean beat the Finn’s time by a tenth of a second.

Kevin Magnussen made a successful return to Formula 1 posting the fourth-fastest time of the day and racked up 103 laps, after Renaults first two days of testing were troubled with software glitches and turbo failures.

The day wasn’t completely a success for Renault, when Magnussen stopped on track with an hour left in the day’s running. Renault attempted to get the Dane back out to the track with 15 minutes left in the session, although he made it near the end of the pit lane before pulling over for the final time.

Carlos Sainz Jr covered the most amount of laps with an impressive total of 161, although his day wasn’t trouble free when he brought out the first red flag of the day when his right rear wheel came off after not being attached properly.

Nico Rosberg finished his morning session in fifth position ahead of Sainz, and four-tenths quicker than teammate Lewis Hamilton as the pair shared testing duties for Mercedes.

Felipe Nasr was slightly quicker than Hamilton driving the 2015 Sauber, and over three seconds adrift from Hülkenberg’s best time.

Daniil Kvyat got his first taste in the new Red Bull Racing RB12 and ended his day of testing in ninth, two-tenths of a second quicker than Felipe Massa in the Williams. It was Massa’s first run in the Williams after he took over testing duties from Valtteri Bottas, completing 109 laps.

A minor fire caused by a hydraulic leak hindered Jenson Button’s day, he was only able to complete 51 laps and record a best time four seconds off the pace in his McLaren Honda.

Rio Haryanto was last in his first official outing with Manor Racing, running for 78 laps and was five seconds off Hülkenberg’s benchmark. The Indonesian had a spin in the morning session which brought out the second red flag off the day.
