Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel has concluded the final pre-season test quickest, posting a 1:22.852 on the soft tyre, the fastest time on the compound seen over the two tests.
The four-time world champion set the pace three of the four days he spent behind the wheel, along with Kimi Raikkonen’s two sessions where he was fastest, Ferrari topped five of the total eight days testing.
Vettel’s best time was set in the morning session as he posted a few qualifying laps on the soft tyre, then spent the afternoon session completing race simulations, lapping the Barcelona circuit 142 times.
Carlos Sainz Jr. placed the Toro Rosso second at the end of the days running, posting a time two-tenths of a second off Vettel’s pace on the ultra-soft compound.
A late time posted by Felipe Massa on the super soft in the morning session saw Felipe Massa jump from 10th to third position, seven-tenths slower than the Ferrari. The Brazilian racked up 129 laps over the day, four less than Sainz’s total.
Sergio Perez only completed 60 laps but finished his final day of testing in fourth position, just under half a second quicker than Lewis Hamilton, whose Mercedes ran into trouble for the first time this year.
Hamilton completed 69 laps before a transmission problem ended his morning session early, as well as delaying Nico Rosberg’s run in the afternoon. Rosberg finished down in 13th without using any of the soft compound tyres.
Daniel Ricciardo and Jenson Button both completed over 120 laps on the final day of testing, with the Australian placing his Red Bull in sixth, three-tenths faster than Button’s McLaren.
A hydraulic problem limited Jolyon Palmer’s last day in the car, restricting his morning session to just 31 laps. The Briton added 59 more laps in the afternoon session, with his best lap on the super-soft tyre good enough for eighth position.
Marcus Ericsson was ninth in the Sauber using the soft compound tyre, he was three-tenths faster than Romain Grosjean in the Haas, who split running with teammate Esteban Gutierrez after a brake-by-wire failure plagued their Thursday testing session. The Haas pair accumulated 91 laps between them.
Mechanical issues confined Rio Haryanto to the garage after just the installation lap in the morning session, however the Indonesian completed 57 laps in the afternoon session and was 3.2 seconds off the pace using the ultra-soft tyre.
