Red Bull Racing has released images of an alternate canopy head protection system, which shares similar characteristics to the Mercedes halo concept although includes a protective screen.

The Red Bull design looks much sleeker than the bar of the halo we saw Ferrari trial in testing, and doesn’t impair a Canopydriver’s vision as there is no mounting points in front of the driver.

However, the Red Bull design will not be a feature on the 2017 fleet of Formula 1 cars, as the halo design has been “tested thoroughly” according to Charlie Whiting, whereas the Red Bull design has not.

This means that any design other than the halo concept will not be considered for 2017.

One thing is for sure, when a canopy system is introduced into the sport, it will be mandatory for all drivers to use it and not optional as Lewis Hamilton suggested.
