As technical issues interrupted a practice session each for Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, the race didn’t hold better fortunes for the pairing as both felt a better result was achievable.
The two youngsters provided fans with brilliant racing for the majority of the race, but a pit stop blunder for Verstappen cost him multiple places in the race.
Verstappen finished the race in 10th position, a second behind teammate Sainz in ninth, although the Dutchman was running as high as third fending off Lewis Hamilton when he made his first pit stop.
“We have a fantastic car and to finish P10 here is not where we should be,” Verstappen said.
“I’m very disappointed as this was a great opportunity for us to get a very good result. Now we just need to focus on the next race and try and score more points than today.”
After the miscommunication with Verstappen’s pit stop, he fed into the race behind Sainz where the two would battle each other to the end of the race.
Sainz went on to hold a resurgent Verstappen off, however, he too was frustrated with his result.
“I’m not entirely happy with today’s result because I think we could’ve scored more points with the car we have, but I did everything I could to finish as high up as possible… To finish in P9 is frustrating,” Sainz said after the race.
“After the red flag things got interesting and even though it’s not the easiest of tracks to overtake, I was able to do some good moves – some of them were quite tough! I did my race and I think we put on a good show. I enjoyed it out there but I think we deserved to end up higher up instead of going backwards after qualifying in P7 yesterday.”
