Mercedes has underlined its insistence that the threat from Ferrari is more dangerous than many believe by electing to spend two of its available engine development tokens to upgrade its power units’ fuel systems.

The upgraded parts – which do not require a change in the power units themselves – will be available to Mercedes’ customer outfits, Williams, Force India and Manor Racing.

The reigning champion team will continue to run the current power units – with the new fuel systems – for both Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg while available track mileage remains on these respective units.

Mercedes has 11 remaining development tokens following this upgrade. Ferrari has just six left, having recently used three tokens to make combustion improvements to its V6 turbo-hybrid power units in time for this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix. This upgrade, however, require both Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen, to switch to new power units this weekend.
