Nico Rosberg believes that his teammate Lewis Hamilton has the ability – both skilfully and mentally – to bounce back and fight for the title despite losing points early in the season.
Rosberg has won the first four races of the season, which extends his unbeaten run to seven as he won the final three races of the 2015 season. This has handed him an early buffer to his Briton teammate early in the championship of 43 points.
No driver who has won the first four races of the season has failed to win the championship, although despite what history says, Rosberg remains prudent.
“They didn’t have Lewis Hamilton as their team-mate,” Rosberg said about the champions who had won the first four races of a season. “That’s the battle I have.”
“This is completely not worth talking about yet, at this point in time, Lewis is driving as strongly as ever, as you have seen in the last few weeks. He will bounce back.
“He doesn’t have an issue with fighting back with his head, he has always shown that. I’m sure we’ll see more of the battle between us. It’s always going to be tough against him,” he continued.
While there are some that suggest Rosberg’s race wins have been easy, especially due to Hamilton’s MGU-H problem in the Chinese and Russian GP qualifying sessions, Rosberg is quick to disagree.
“Winning F1 races is not like an open goal, I don’t think that’s a good comparison,” he said.
“It’s not something that I could’ve expected, but now that’s the way it is and I’m very happy about it.
“It’s been a great four races, very enjoyable, and I’m aware that it’s not going to continue like that forever.”
