Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo says he can feel the progress Renault’s new engine produces, as the Australian lapped the Circuit de Catalunya 89 times during yesterday’s in-season test.

Ricciardo finished the day’s test in 6th position and a second off Sebastian Vettel’s benchmark, however, the Red Bull driver is confident in the development being made.

“The progress is definitely there, now to make the next step which will be the last step we’re after to get after the Mercedes,” Ricciardo told the media after his testing session.

“We’re getting closer and that’s obviously exciting. Monaco will be our best chance yet, obviously we had a good chance last weekend, but for pure speed, Monaco should be interesting.”

After spending a lengthy period in the garage during the morning, Ricciardo spent the remainder of the morning session evaluating the aero of the car, before switching to the soft compound in the afternoon session.

We had a few new bits on the car and tried a few new bits and crazy aero things on the car this morning. It all went pretty good and [it was] another glorious day of testing!” Ricciardo continued.

“It’s not as exciting as a Grand Prix weekend, I can tell you that much but we did some good stuff.”

“[It was a] bit of a slow start today, but we got the important things out of the way and we have another day tomorrow for the team, at least. Three street circuits coming up, it’ll be good fun.”
