Lewis Hamilton has finished Friday practice on top, beating Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and teammate Nico Rosberg by a comfortable margin.
The world champion took control of the session from Max Verstappen by three-tenths of a second on the soft compound tyre, then improved on his time dramatically on the ultra-softs to register a 1:14.212, just under two-tenths of a second faster than last year’s pole position time.
Both Mercedes looked fast on their long runs also, as Rosberg was able to lap the ultra-softs 29 times before making the switch to the soft compound tyre late in the session.
Verstappen finished the session in fourth position ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo as both drivers came within a second of Hamilton’s benchmark. The Red Bull Racing pair also completed their race simulation on the ultra-soft tyres and set times that were a couple of tenths off the Mercedes’ pace.
Valtteri Bottas was the best-placed Williams driver in sixth position and spent 20 laps on the ultra-soft tyre before making the switch to the super-softs. He finished seven positions higher than teammate Felipe Massa who was three-tenths down off of Bottas’ time.
Jenson Button finished inside the top ten and placed his McLaren in seventh, two one-hundredths of a second ahead of Kimi Räikkönen in eighth position.
Nico Hülkenberg and Carlos Sainz rounded out the top ten while Fernando Alonso and Sergio Pérez finished narrowly outside in 11th and 12th position respectively.
