Sebastian Vettel has topped the final practice session ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Max Verstappen and Nico Rosberg.
The top spot rotated between a number of drivers throughout the session as the Mercedes seemed to struggle getting their tyres to optimum temperature on a cool track. After topping both practice sessions yesterday, Lewis Hamilton was only able to register a best time good enough for fifth position, over four-tenths of a second off Vettel’s pace.
His teammate Rosberg didn’t fare much better either, as the German was just inside four-tenths off Vettel, and struggled to compete with the Red Bulls who were running most of the session on the super soft tyres.
Verstappen was able to set a time good enough to top the first half of the session on the super soft tyre posting a 1:14.310, a tenth of a second down on Hamilton’s best time in FP2 on the ultra-soft tyre.
The session was filled with drivers exploring the limits of their brakes and searching for braking points, as many found themselves having to cut the final chicane after locking their front tyres.
Daniil Kvyat had an excursion off in the escape road at Turn 3 and had to complete a difficult three-point turn to make his way back to the track, he recovered to finish the session down in fourteenth while his Toro Rosso teammate Carlos Sainz was half a second quicker in seventh position.
Fernando Alonso put his McLaren into the top ten for the first time this weekend finishing eighth ahead of Sergio Pérez and Felipe Massa, while Jenson Button was a few tenths behind in thirteenth.
Kevin Magnussen brought the session to a premature end with just over 10 minutes left to run when he binned his Renault into the wall at the exit of Turn 7.
The Dane got onto the throttle too early with too much acceleration and lost control of the car, sending him into the wall which destroyed the front left of the Renault.
