Austrian Grand Prix promoters have announced a once in a lifetime opportunity for fans attending this weekend’s race in Spielberg, as one fan will be given the opportunity to wave the chequered flag for Sunday’s race.

The promoters’ initiative is a first for Formula 1, as waving the chequered flag in place of an official is reserved for only VIPs attending the event. The promotion has been introduced to increase ticket sales for the Austrian Grand Prix, which according to reports are down in numbers compared to the previous two years.

Any fan with a ticket to this weekend’s event can upload a photo or video at the chequered flag waving fan booth which is set up in the fan village. The winner will be determined by how creative or enthusiastic their wave is.

Red Bull drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen both believe the idea is a winner.

“I think it’s awesome that a fan gets to basically finish the race for us in Austria,” Ricciardo said.

“If I was a kid and I got the opportunity to do that, I’d be blown away.

“It’s another way to engage the fans and bring them closer to our sport. I think it’s a great initiative and hopefully it’s the start of many more little things like this.”

Verstappen is also in favour of the promotion.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the fans to get a little bit closer to F1, especially waving the chequered flag, that’s a very special moment.”
