Mercedes has confirmed that Nico Rosberg’s car requires a new gearbox after his heavy crash during the final practice session. As a result, the championship leader will incur a five-place grid penalty.

Having set the pace in both FP1 and FP2, Rosberg crashed heavily into the barrier at the exit of Turn Two after suffering a rear suspension failure, where the suspension seemed to unhinge itself from the chassis as Rosberg drove over the kerbs.

As a result, the German’s penalty means that he can only start the race as high as sixth position, opening the door for teammate Lewis Hamilton to make up ground in the championship standings.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel will also take a grid penalty this weekend as he too requires a gearbox change.
