Mercedes has notified the FIA of their intention to appeal the penalty handed down by the Stewards to their driver Nico Rosberg in relation to a breach in radio communications during Sunday’s British GP.

The German manufacturer was penalised by the Stewards after giving specific instructions over team radio in order to avoid a gearbox issue.

The team told Rosberg to avoid seventh gear which aided the German’s driving style during the race, which is prohibited under the revised radio clampdown regulations.

A formal appeal will also give Mercedes time whether they actually want to proceed with an appeal or to drop it. If the team chooses to proceed, whatever the outcome will be it will set a precedence for future races of what teams can and can’t get away with.

Mercedes now has 96 hours to decide whether to pursue the appeal.
