Nico Rosberg has held onto his advantage over Lewis Hamilton at the Hockenheimring, finishing almost fourth tenths of a second quicker than his teammate.
In similar circumstances to the opening session, Sebastian Vettel was third for Ferrari, although the German closed the gap to the Mercedes pair to almost half a second.
Max Verstappen edged his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo for fourth position while Kimi Raikkonen was the last of the field to be within one second of Rosberg’s best lap.
Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg finished strongly in seventh position ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button, while Sergio Perez was ninth in the other Force India. Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten just ahead of the two Toro Rosso drivers.
During the race simulation stint, the Red Bull drivers were lapping times similar to the Mercedes on the soft compound tyre, which will be favoured during the race.
All four drivers were lapping the circuit in the low 1:20s, with Ricciardo even dipping into the 1:19s on the occasion with tyres a few laps fresher than the Mercedes.
Ferrari, on the other hand seemed to be off the pace slightly on both compounds, while Williams struggled with their race simulation on the soft tyre having set times similar to the Ferrari’s and even Red Bull on the super softs.
Esteban Gutierrez was back in his Haas for FP2 after Charles Leclerc took over for the first practice session, the Mexican finished in 16th position, two places down from teammate Romain Grosjean.
Also back in the car for FP2 was Renault’s Jolyon Palmer, who sat out the opening session as reserve driver Esteban Ocon took over the cockpit for FP1.
