Charles Leclerc’s qualifying sweep continued as he took a brilliant sixth straight pole for the British GP feature race in Silverstone. The Ferrari junior’s lap of 1:38.427 was four tenths quicker than nearest competitor and title rival Oliver Rowland who will start his home event from the front row in second place.
Rowland’s countryman Jordan King will line up fourth on the grid as the two Britons were split by Norman Nato in third.
Russian Time’s Artem Markelov lines up fifth ahead of Nicholas Latifi and Sergio Canamasas in sixth and seventh respectively. While ART’s pace was nowhere near their rivals with Nobuharu Matsushita lining up eighth, out-qualifying team mate Alexander Albon in tenth with Sergio Sette Câmara splitting them in ninth.
Albon was subsequently handed a three-place grid penalty by the FIA Stewards for impeding Trident driver Nabil Jeffri in the session; Rapax’s Nyck de Vries has been promoted to tenth place as a result.
Formula 2’s newest rookie, local driver Callum Ilott, makes his debut at his home event with Trident but could only manage 15th fastest in qualifying. However, he still out-qualified his team mate Nabil Jeffri in 17th.
By contrast to Leclerc, the session was a disaster for his teammate Antonio Fuoco who qualified slowest of all. The mercurial Italian, who seemed to have turned around a difficult season by scoring his maiden podium last weekend in Austria, crashed back to earth and will have done his slim chances of retaining his Ferrari Academy role no favours at all.
With this pole, Leclerc adds 4 points to his championship lead over Rowland, which now amounts to 53 points.
The Feature Race, to be held over 29 laps, starts at on Saturday at 15:00 local time (GMT +1).
