McLaren-backed driver Nyck de Vries will race for reigning Formula 2 champions PREMA Racing in 2018, the Italian team has confirmed.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a solid rookie campaign in Formula 2 this year, claiming one victory and four further podium finishes to finish seventh overall in the Drivers’ Championship standings.

The Dutch youngster will target victory in next year’s championship in the squad which has seen Pierre Gasly (2016) and Charles Leclerc (2017) crowned series champions in the past two seasons.

“I am delighted to join such a successful team as Prema and I thank them for putting their faith in me,” de Vries said.

“We have known each other for a while, so to finally be racing together is very exciting.

“We’re very much looking forward to the new challenges that the FIA Formula 2 has introduced with the new car for 2018. It will be a very competitive championship, may the best win!”

PREMA Racing team principal René Rosin added: “We are delighted to have secured the services of Nyck for the 2018 Formula 2 season.

“His skills are outstanding and we hope that, together with Prema, he will be able to make the most out of his talent and fight for the title, while helping us to get a head start for the new season.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing our great and well-sorted pairing on-track.”

De Vries will be teammate to Indonesian driver Sean Gelael, who has already been confirmed at the squad for 2018 in a signing which has surprised a number of insiders.

The Italian squad is the second team after Carlin Motorsport to finalise its 2018 driving line-up.
