Renault academy driver Jack Aitken will make his FIA Formula 2 Championship debut in 2018 with the ART Grand Prix team.

The 22-year-old, a multiple Formula Renault 2.0 champion, finished runner-up to Mercedes protégé George Russell in the GP3 Series championship standings last year.

Aitken featured in the Formula 2 end-of-year test session at Abu Dhabi with the ART team. He was recently re-signed to Renault’s young driver program for a third year.

“I am delighted to sign with ART GP for another year, taking on the challenge of F2,” said Aitken.

“I have made a lot of friends here, and I have the confidence in them and myself that we can have an even better season together this year.

“We will aim high, and push hard. Rookie or not, I want to be challenging at the front like always.”

The ART Grand Prix team, co-founded by Nicolas Todt and Sauber team principal Frédéric Vasseur, is expected to announce Russell as Aitken’s teammate for the 2018 Formula 2 season.

The French outfit ran Nobuhara Matsushita and Alexander Albon in the 2017 Formula 2 season. The team finished a distant fourth overall in the Teams’ Championship standings with Matsushita claiming a pair of Sprint Race victories.
