GPp3 Series champion George Russell will race for ART Grand Prix in the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship.
The 19-year-old Mercedes-backed driver is widely considered a future star and impressed with two Friday practice session outings for Mercedes customer team Force India at the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix. He also drove for the Mercedes F1 team in the mid-season Hungaroring test (pictured below).
Russell had a largely unchallenged run to last year’s GP3 Series title, claiming four wins and a further three podium finishes to end up over 100 points clear of teammate Jack Aitken, who finished second overall.
The pair will now be teammates once again in Formula 2, with Russell’s appointment coming hot on the heels that Aitken – who is himself on Renault’s academy programme – would race in ART’s Formula 2 line-up.
“I am very happy to be able to race in Formula 2 while continuing to drive for ART Grand Prix,” said Russell.
“We had a very successful year together last season and so it makes sense to continue working together and seek out new successes.
“With the introduction of a new Formula 2 car, it will be challenging for all the teams to optimise the set-up from the start of the season, but I have every confidence in ART Grand Prix to get there and to be competitive as quickly as possible.
“I cannot wait to take part in the first race and fight against some of the best drivers and teams at the pinnacle of junior motorsport.”
