The Romeo Ferraris team has confirmed it will enter a pair of Alfa Romeo Giuliettas in the inaugural FIA World Touring Car Cup season.

The Giulietta has already proven itself to be a race-winner in last year’s TCR International Series at the hands of drivers Dušan Borković and Davit Kajaia.

Based in Milan, the Romeo Ferraris team first entered touring car racing in 1965. In 1974 the operation was put in hiatus, but it returned to racing twenty years later where it was a race-winner across a variety of Italian championships before joining the TCR International Series in 2016.

The team has not yet confirmed who will be driving its cars in the upcoming season.

“We are delighted to announce the entry of our cars in the FIA WTCR,” Romeo Ferraris operations manager Michela Cerruti said. “For our company, it is a big step forward, as after two seasons in the TCR International, we will enter a FIA-sanctioned world series, providing technical assistance to our cars.

“The proposition is certainly very interesting and we rely a lot on the WTCR promoters and organisers to deliver a winning package. The introduction of TCR cars will certainly raise the level of both the competition and the show on track, in a series that has always attracted huge numbers of spectators and viewers.”

Although the WTCR championship forbids manufacturer-backed entries, Alfa Romeo Giulietta is the fifth different car model confirmed for the maiden season – other brands confirmed to-date include Honda (Boutsen-Ginion Racing), Audi (Comtoyou Racing), Hyundai (BRC Racing Team) and Volkswagen (Sébastien Loeb Racing).
