The Australian Grand Prix round of this year’s Supercars Championship will feature two twilight races, event organisers have announced.
The premier touring car category will race for championship points at Albert Park for the first time in its history next month.
A provisional event schedule has been released, confirming the round will feature four races: there will be two daytime sprint races and two longer feature races held in the evening which will feature a mandatory pit stop.
The opening race, the third of the championship season after the Adelaide 500 season-opener, will be a twilight affair that kicks off at 17:50 local time on Friday.
Saturday’s track action will feature two races: a sprint race over 13 laps at 12:40 followed by another 25-lap feature race at 18:20 to follow the Formula 1 qualifying session.
The final sprint race of the weekend will take place at 13:45 on Sunday in the lead up to the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. The driver who scores the most points over the weekend will be awarded the inaugural Larry Perkins Trophy, named in honour of the Australian touring car legend and former Grand Prix driver.
“The twilight time slot works well for our television audience as well as fans at the track, who will get to see our first points races at Albert Park in perfect conditions,” said Shane Howard, Supercars’ Acting CEO, said.
“To participate fully as a round of our Championship in Melbourne with 400km of racing across three days which includes pit stops, is a huge win for our fans, teams and our drivers.
“It is an honour to be alongside Formula One at Albert Park and as an official support category to the world’s premier form of motorsport.”
