Yvan Muller has ended his brief racing retirement, announcing the formation of his own team which will contest the inaugural FIA World Touring Car Cup with a pair of Hyundai i30 N TCRs.

The Frenchman, a four-time champion of the FIA WTCC, has declared his intent by securing the services of reigning WTCC title-winner Thed Björk to be his teammate to complete a formidable line-up.

Björk look set to be on the sidelines after claiming the 2017 FIA WTCC crown, as Polestar Cyan Racing was unable to enter the new WTCR series on account of long-time partner Volvo not having a TCR-spec car.

With the Swedish outfit opting to sit on the sidelines for a year, Björk was loaned to Yvan Muller Racing.

“I am excited to be back for the 2018 season, especially with Yvan – we had a great cooperation last year,” said Björk.

“To race together with him in the new regulations is truly motivating and inspiring. We have a lot of new things to learn and the competition is hard, but my goal is always to win.”

Muller retired from competitive racing at the end of the 2016 WTCC season, signing with Polestar Cyan Racing as a test driver and adviser. He made a one-off comeback at the season finale in Qatar to successfully aid Björk’s championship tilt, but appeared to reject the notion of a full-time return to racing in 2018.

The 48-year-old has instead had a change of heart, although he was quick to downplay his own championship aspirations.

“My goal is a bit different than in the past,” he said.

“I have done my career and my focus now is on the team and our development rather than outright results. I am pleased to have Thed involved, he trusts me and I trust him. There is no doubt that he is a great driver, I know because I spent the season with him last year.”
