Mercedes DTM protégé Maximilian Günther will race in this year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship with the Arden International team, it has been confirmed.
The German graduated to Formula 1’s official feeder series after finishing third overall in last year’s FIA Formula 3 European Championship standings where he claimed five wins and three pole positions.
The 20-year-old, who hails from Oberstdorf, will be teammate to Honda Formula 1 junior Nirei Fukuzumi, completing the British team’s driving line-up.
Günther previously sampled Formula 2 machinery at the end-of-year test at Abu Dhabi with the Racing Engineering team.
“I’m absolutely ready to take the next step and can’t wait to go up against the world’s best young drivers,” said Günther.
“I know that this move will be successful with the backing of Arden’s experienced team.
“Many thanks also to my partners and sponsors, who are supporting me as I progress.”
Arden is the second team to-date – alongside ART Grand Prix – to field an all-rookie line-up for the 2018 season.
Rival outfits DAMS, MP Motorsport and Trident are yet to confirm at least one driver for the upcoming season.
