Team WRT has become the latest touring car operation to confirm its participation in the inaugural FIA World Touring Car Cup, announcing 2017 TCR International Series champion Jean-Karl Vernay and three-time British Touring Car Championship winner Gordon Shedden in its line-up.

The Belgian squad claimed the TCR International Series titles in both of its two years of competition, with Stefano Comini winning the crown in the team’s debut year in 2016 before Vernay backed up the effort in 2017 with assistance from Shedden and former FIA World Touring Car Championship winner Rob Huff.

In both seasons the team fielded Volkswagen Golf GTI TCRs, but this year the outfit has swapped marques and will enter a pair of Audi RS 3 LMSs (pictured above) for its star pairing. The team will receive assistance from Audi Sport customer racing.

Shedden’s appointment to the FIA WTCR grid was expected after the Scot’s surprised announcement that he would not contest the 2018 BTCC season.

“The switch to WTCR was quite unexpected but comes at a perfect time in my career,” he explained.

“I had a fantastic time in BTCC winning three championships and becoming only the third Scottish driver to win the championship alongside Jim Clark and John Cleland.

“The RS3 saloon is a ‘global’ car, compared to the many ‘hatchbacks’ competing. It has a unique silhouette which makes it instantly recognisable.

“WRT is a very successful team with a long and flourishing partnership with Audi Sport and its customer racing division.

“They’ve won the Spa 24 Hours and the Bathurst 12 Hour in the GT3 category and so for me it was a very logical decision to join.”

Team WRT is the third Belgian outfit to join the FIA WTCR grid, with fellow Audi runners Comtoyou Racing fielding four cars while Boutsen Ginion Racing will enter two Honda Civics.
