Allan Moffat’s life is one of success, being one of the most important figures in the Australian racing community back in its formative days.
His list of career achievements rivals those of more celebrated European and even Australian drivers, taking out the national ATCC title four times, winning the Bathurst 500/1000 four times and winning 32 races from 100 starts.
What many people don’t know is how Moffat got in to racing and the calibre of people he worked with before becoming a household name in the 1970s through his successes with Ford.
Highlighted in the book are not only the good times such as the iconic 1-2 finish at Bathurst in 1977 but the darker times with Ford’s withdrawal from motorsport, forcing Moffat to change to the Mazda RX7 which has gained a cult following as a V8 killer.
Although Moffat acknowledges his coldness to the media and public in his racing years, it’s easy to see why he appeared to be that way when you find out what was playing out behind the scenes at the time.
While Peter Brock is often celebrated as ‘Peter Perfect’, it’s Moffat who should be given credit as the perfectionist in times where preparation and investment were as much of an influence on race results as pure driving talent.
If you want an insight to the mind and man involved in one of the most important periods of Australian motorsport, Climbing the Mountain is a must-buy.
