German squad HWA AG will join as an additional team on the FIA Formula E Championship grid next season.
Best known for its long-term partnership with Mercedes AMG – running the German marque’s entries in the DTM series with great success – HWA has also already had some exposure to Formula E, having formed a partnership with foundation team Venturi ahead of the current season.
Speaking at the announcement of his team’s entry into the championship, HWA AG CEO Ulrich Fritz (pictured above, with Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag) was excited about challenges the series will bring.
“Formula E is a completely new motorsport discipline with extremely tough competition. It’s a challenge that we’re very happy to rise to. HWA AG are the most successful team ever in DTM history. Our goal is to continue the company’s success story in Formula E,” he said.
The introduction of the second-generation Formula E car for the 2018/19 has allowed the inclusion of additional teams to the championship, as along with being faster the new car eliminates the need for each driver to run two cars. With fewer cars being shipped around the world and less pit lane garage space needed to fit the existing teams, extra entries can be accommodated.
Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag welcomed HWA to the series, pointing out that the inclusion of the new team is a major step in the ongoing growth of the championship.
“Not only does Formula E have a new-look and unique visual identity for season five, with the futuristic next-generation car – but we also have exciting news with a new team entering the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in HWA AG,” he said.
“It’s rewarding to see a name so synonymous with racing join the already impressive and growing list of teams and manufacturers competing in Formula E.”
HWA’s partnership with Venturi will now be extended as the German squad launches its own team, with Venturi-supplied powertrains to power the HWA cars.
Venturi President Gildo Pastor was also at the announcement, and was please to be able extend his organisation’s work with HWA.
“I’m delighted to contribute to HWA AG’s arrival as a Formula E team, by providing them our Venturi Gen2 cars for next season. Our partnership over the current season is a win for both organisations. I have no doubt that the experience of Venturi Automobiles in high-performance electric vehicles will be a valuable asset for HWA AG, who will be keen to add to an already impressive record,” he added.
While HWA will first line up in Formula E for the first round of season five, the next event of season four – the ninth round at the Berlin ePrix – will take place at Berlin Tempelhof Airport this Saturday, May 19.
