Mercedes protégé George Russell has claimed his third Formula 2 pole position in a row after topping qualifying at Silverstone.
The Englishman had earlier dominated his rivals by over 0.7 seconds in Friday’s earlier practice session, but was pushed all the way in the later afternoon qualifying session. His pole margin was just seven hundredths of a second to Alexander Albon, who had himself swept to a hat-trick of pole positions earlier in the season.
Czech outfit Charouz Racing System locked out the second row of the grid as the team’s impressive rookie campaign continued. Antonio Fuoco ran off-strategy in qualifying to briefly hold provisional pole until his time was bettered by Russell and Albon, but his effort still proved good enough for third place ahead of teammate Louis Delétraz.
Sergio Sette Câmara edged out Carlin teammate and former championship leader Lando Norris, with the pair claiming fifth and sixth on the grid respectively.
The top ten qualifiers were completed by Arjun Maini (Trident), Artem Markelov (Russian Time), Luca Ghiotto (Campos) and Maximilian Günther (Arden).
Saturday’s 29-lap Feature Race gets underway at 15:45 local time (GMT +1).
