Formula 2 will lead the pathway to 18-inch tyres when they debut the new look on their cars next season ahead of the 2021 Formula 1 rule changes.
Pirelli confirmed the news prior to the start of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, the third round of this year’s F2 season.
The Italian manufacturer’s head of F1 Mario Isola believes the early switch in F2 will help them understand more about the tyre before F1 don the new spec wheels in the following season.
“We are delighted to introduce 18-inch tyres to [Formula 2] a full year before they race in Formula 1,” he said.
“This move will assist us greatly as we develop a new generation of Formula 1 tyres for 2021.”
It’s the first significant element the feeder series has trailed before Formula 1, intended to bring the two series even closer together and help prepare the next generation of drivers for F1.
CEO of F2 Bruno Michel said the move to new tyres next year is a golden opportunity.
“I am very pleased that F2 will race with the 18-inch tyres as early as 2020,” Michel added.
“[It] means that the drivers who will graduate from our championship to F1 in 2021 will be able to adapt even quicker.
“This is a great opportunity for Formula 2 and our drivers.”
The move to 18-inch wheels is one of the only rules to be locked in for the 2021 F1 season.
