Scott McLaughlin claimed a narrow victory over a fast-closing Shane van Gisbergen as the Supercars Championship action finally resumed in the opening race at a spectator-free Sydney Motorsport Park.
Having claimed pole position in the earlier three-part qualifying session, the DJR Team Penske converted that into the lead of the 32-lap race and built an early three-second buffer to his Red Bull Holden Racing Team rival.
Van Gisbergen was able to cut back into McLaughlin’s lead, but in opting to delay his compulsory pit stop that meant he rejoined the circuit in fifth place.
With fresher tyres, he quickly worked his way back up the order and began an impressive charge to close up to McLaughlin.
The final lap was a thrilling climax to the race, with McLaughlin using every trick to block an attack from his New Zealand compatriot. The pair crossed the finish line just 0.18 seconds apart in a sprint down the start/finish straight.
Van Gisbergen’s teammate completed the podium in third place, finishing 1.3 seconds ahead of the Walkinshaw Andretti United Holden of Chaz Mostert.
The Sydney Supersprint weekend continues on Sunday, with two more 32-lap races taking place at 12:15pm AEST and 2:35pm.
